The Greatest Gift

What is the greatest blessing that a Christian has?

A few come to mind right off the bat: peace, hope, joy, forgiveness, life, and we can’t help but add love. But I think there is a greater gift than even these blessings. The greatest blessing a Christian has is the privilege of knowing God. In John 17:3, Jesus defines eternal life as knowing God. Jesus says in John 14:7 that those who know the Son know the Father. How incredible is that?

We can know, and really know, the Creator of the Universe. Isn’t that something? This is more than blind hope or wishful thinking; this is being able to say, “Yes, I do know the Father, and he knows me!” How is it that we can see the unseen? How is it that we can approach the unapproachable? Do we have some sort of secret knowledge or are we more righteous than others in the world?

Phillip wanted to know how this was possible, so he requested, “Show us the Father, and that will be enough for us.” Jesus responded, “If you have seen me you have seen the Father!”

What a gift! Through Jesus we can commune with the Almighty God!

Do you know all of those songs about mansions? I love singing them! But did you know that the word translated mansions is used twice in John 14. Once in the “mansions” passage in verse 2 (probably translated “dwelling places” in your modern Bible). The other is in verse 23. Jesus promises, “Those who love me will keep my word, and my Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them” (John 14:23).

The greatest gift is the reality that God has made their home in our hearts: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. All other gifts flow from this presence of God in our lives. If we can begin to grasp what this means, then all of the troubles in our life begin to fade into the background. – Daniel Rogers
